Interviews
Job interviews can be unpleasant, intimidating experiences. It is natural to be nervous, but if you are well prepared and follow these sensible tips, then you will get through the interview, and you might just get that job! -
PREPARE. It is essential that you know your stuff. This means researching the company background and what it is they actually do. Remember to closely read the advertisement for the position itself; so that you know the job you are applying for in detail.
ARRIVE EARLY Make sure you arrive at least 15 minutes early to give yourself time to relax and prepare mentally for the interview.
BE PRESENTABLE . A job interview always requires a smart, professional, clean outfit to be worn. Also ensure that you are clean and fresh for the interview, anything other than this will create a very bad impression.
TRY TO RELAX.. This sounds difficult given the situation, but if you allow yourself 10 minutes to relax before the interview, you will appear and feel more at ease. If you are able to sit before your interview, then try this breathing exercise: sit straight-backed in the chair, with your hands on your knees. Close you eyes and breathe in deeply and slowly through your nose, counting four or five seconds. Hold your breath for two seconds, and then slowly breathe out through your mouth, also counting to four or five. Be aware of your shoulders and neck as you breathe, and try to relax them as you exhale. Repeat this five times.
BE YOURSELF! . They invited you to the interview because they consider you a serious candidate for the position. So answer the questions as clearly as you can, and be yourself.
ASK QUESTIONS. . This ties in with tip 1. Prepare a question or two for the end of the interview, as they will usually ask whether you have any questions at this point. This is your opportunity to lead the conservation, so use it to ask a pertinent and worthwhile question. People often ask about the salary/conditions, when the job starts, how long the decision will take on who gets the job and so on.
