
History of Sun Yat-sen University
Sun Yat-sen University was originally established as National Guangdong University. In 1926, following the passing of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, the institution was renamed National Sun Yat-sen University.
The modern Sun Yat-sen University was officially re-established in October 2001 through the merger of Sun Yat-sen University and Sun Yat-sen Medical University, which had been separated during the faculty restructuring of 1952.
Today, the university operates across five campuses in three cities: Guangzhou, Zhuhai and Shenzhen.
Outstanding Achievements
Sun Yat-sen University is home to 43 national scientific research and innovation platforms and 269 provincial and ministerial platforms, with a strong focus on advancing major projects in science, engineering, and medicine. The university consists of 70 faculties offering 129 undergraduate programmes, while its postgraduate education covers nearly all disciplines except military science.
Students have consistently excelled in academic competitions, earning numerous awards at both national and international levels. This strong academic culture translates into impressive career outcomes in 2024, nearly 80% of graduates found employment in key national industries and fields such as clinical medicine, public health, artificial intelligence, and advanced manufacturing, with employers reporting high levels of satisfaction.
Sun Yat-sen University has established an impressive track record in graduate advancement. Over 90% of students in China continue their studies at elite ‘double first-class’ universities and major research institutes, while international graduates gain admission to some of the world’s most prestigious institutions, including Imperial College London, Oxford, Harvard, Cambridge, the National University of Singapore, and the University of Hong Kong.
